“No Country or society can rise above the level of its teachers”, the saying avows the power and significance of the teachers. The education department have immense faith in teachers’ efficiency who fulfil the society’s expectations. None other than the teachers can play key role in building strong societies. The teachers not just teach letters, instead they create human resource for the future of the nation. They work as a person even in the exceptional circumstances being a knowledge-bond between stakeholders/parents and the Department. The state is dreaming of perceiving such a strong teacher community. The Department aspires that the teachers ought to be a strong power so as to march towards achieving comprehensive goals being backbone of the education system.

The governments have been putting in their best efforts from the times, however both the level and range of expectations from the teachers have increased. The State Government has realised that these wide range of expectations cannot be satisfied by the mere annual plans and inadequate subject specific trainings. With a noble intention of empowering teachers and developing teacher resources, anew thoughts have been lined up by the Karnataka State Government to propose and implement this program titled “Guru Chethana’. Teachers professional development demands long term plan, thus exclusive curriculum has been developed. The program offers variety of modules and enables the teachers to be autonomous to choose the modules of their interest. These modules, comprising education perspective, subject perspective, key concepts, pedagogy and assessment, are integrated with one another and not looked at in isolation which helps the teachers in designing classroom processes. There are modules on Education Perspectives, Kannada, Hindi, Science, Social Science, Nali-Kali and Maths in this Guru Chethana Program.

Ojectives:

  1. To enable the teachers to become reflective practitioners
  2. To provide the opportunities to take part in their Professional development by choice
  3. To create autonomous teachers for construing and facilitating children’s learning opportunities.

Specialities of the Program:

  • It is first time in Teacher Education segment that teachers are allowed to choose the modules as per their interests and needs on a scale like this.
  • In order to have a long term plan the department has designed this “Teachers’ Professional Development Curriculum” and the path was laid out for five years by identifying the various themes..
  • There are 42 modules in Kannada medium, 24 modules in Urdu medium, and 20 modules in Marathi medium.
  • The opportunity has been given to the teachers to choose any modules as per their interest and needs, not limiting to the subject they are teaching currently.
  • Teachers are given opportunity to participate in workshops based on their prioritised choices.
  • The teachers can download the comprehensive modules of subject materials, research and various knowledge domains well in advance and come prepared to the training sessions.
  • The workshops provide the teachers with decentralised self-sustained learning spaces to foster self-learning and peer learning.
  • Desire for creating efficient teachers by establishing continuous learning culture in teacher groups.
  • TTMS-Teacher Training Management System portal was created where the teachers can give their choices up to six modules.
  • Once the batch is formed as teachers choose the modules in TTMS portal, they will receive a SMS on their registered mobile number regarding dates and venue of the workshop.
