DSERT ProgramsThe Department of State Educational Research and Training, popularly known as DSERT is the academic wing of the Department of Public Instruction. It aims at providing academic leadership in school education as well as improving the quality of education provided in primary and secondary schools through DIETs and CTEs in the state.
The following Initiatives have been taken in quality Enhancement
1.Support to Science Centres
Legislature assembly segment wise Science Centres have been set up in 224 Government high schools and programs are being conducted to develop scientific attitude and interest among children of Government high schools and surrounding primary schools under the leadership of school head.
2.Establishment of Science Park
The objective is to create scientific awareness among student and teacher community. Science park is helpful in self learning and learning by experience. It has been established experimentally in DIET Gadag and CTE Mysore.
3.ICT @ schools
Computer education is implemented in 480 government high schools in phase I of ICT project, in 1571 government high schools in phase II and computer and computer aided education is being implemented in 1763 government high schools and 2633 aided high schools in phase III of ICT Project.
Under EDUSAT programme lessons are telecasted through DSERT studio to 2603 higher primary schools of Chamarajanagara, Gulbarga, Yadagiri, Bangalore rural and Ramanagara districts. In remaining districts, the heads of the primary and high schools who are interested to implement the programme have to submit the proposal through respective Block Educational Officer to implement the programme using accumulated fund/donors.
5.Tele Education (Satellite Advanced Multimedia Education)
Interactive Tele Education lessons in Mathematics, Science and English for students of class 5 to 10 are being telecast to 1000 kannada medium schools of 36 educationally backward blocks (EBB) from DSERT studio which supports learning in rural children. This is being extended to another 1000 schools in this academic year and will be implemented in 2015-16.
Text based Radio lessons like chinnara chukki, chukki chinna and Keli kali are broadcast for the students of class 1 - 8, Monday to Friday through 13 Stations of All India Radio. Schedule and topics of the broadcast are prepared and supplied to all the schools in the beginning of the academic year and respective subject teachers to facilitate during the broadcast. School heads are permitted to buy new radio or repair the existing one using the accumulated fund or grants available in their school by passing resolution in SDMC meetings. MEENA Radio Programme
The special radio programme 'Meena' is broadcast during school hours to create awareness among school going girls about nutrition, health, gender sensitivity, child rights and hygiene.
7.Revision of state Curriculum and Syllabus
Curriculum and syllabus of class 1 to 10 based on NCF 2005 and D.Ed. curriculum and syllabus based on NCFTE 2009 have been revised.
8.Educational Vocational Guidance and Counselling Centre
Separate Educational Vocational guidance and counselling cells are functioning in CTEs, DIETs and Government and Aided High Schools. Teachers are trained to give guidance and counselling to needy students.
Psychology laboratories are set up in selected 92 Government High Schools covering all districts to solve the personal problems of students. Teachers are trained to handle the laboratories and guide children.
10.National Population Education Programme (NPEP)
To create awareness among adolescents to protect themselves from bad practices and to solve intellectual, emotional and psychological problems, competitions and programs in local folk arts related to the subject are conducted at school level, taluk level and state level through NPEP programs which help to practice and develop responsible behaviour.
11.Implementation of Nali-Kali method
Nali-Kali is joyful and activity based method of learning and helps in self learning. It is implemented in class 1,2 and 3 of all kannada medium primary schools and class 1 and 2 of Urdu medium primary schools of the state. The teachers teaching nail-kali class are trained and joyful learning atmosphere is created by providing necessary learning materials to schools.
SSA organizes information sharing meetings of teachers at cluster level to find solutions to problems related to classroom teaching.
13.Deputation to higher education
Provision is made to depute primary teachers with pay to higher studies to seek B.A (English) and B.Sc (Science / Mathematics) degree. Concerned fee is reimbursed by government. Interested/ eligible teachers can register their names in the DSERT website.
14.Subject Teacher Forum
It is a platform to share ideas, teaching-learning resources and other information with each other using digital resources to support practising teachers in terms of their professional development as well as classroom processes. Interested teachers can participate in different Subject Teacher Forums in Mathematics, Science, Social science, English and Kannada. Head Teacher Forums (HTF) are started to support high school head masters to solve their administrative and academic issues. To connect the teacher educators with the main stream of education, Karnataka Teacher Educators Forum (KTEF) is formed.
15.TESS INDIA Open Educational Resources (OER)
To support teachers and teacher educators in developing their professional skills, Open Educational Resources (OER) are prepared in association with TESS INDIA. A key feature of the OER is the expectation that teachers will be able to use the units or individual activities and case studies, to extend their professional repertoires and apply their learning to new contexts and topic areas. The units are essentially practical, with activities to be carried out in school with staff, students and others.
16.Karnataka Open Educational Resources (KOER)
The Karnataka Open Educational Resources wiki is built by a community of educators who will be engaged in the creation, review, curation and publishing of digital curricular resources on a continuous basis. This resource repository is embedded in the Subject Teacher Forum that has been built across high school teachers of Karnataka who can share directly the audio visuals, web resources and texts. It helps in learning as other teachers can give feedback on the resources created. Teachers and teacher educators can participate in this forum.
The software to map the information of trainings given to primary, high school teachers, DIET & CTE lecturers is being prepared and implemented from the year 2015-16.
An innovative program in which an expert talk is telecasted to share the knowledge through video conferencing to all DIETs / CTEs and BRCs from DSERT studio on first and third Saturdays from 2.30 pm to 4.00 pm
Unique program conducted at block level to give a space for the teachers to ask any profession related questions to the Resource Persons (Experts) who would be answering in the adalat. Such adalats are conducted every trimester in which parents also can participate and know about various educational programs.
DSERT officials along with the Director visit DIETs on two Mondays of every month to ensure the implementation of programs that are offered from DSERT. Officers visit the schools of that district and progress review meeting are conducted with fellow colleagues at DIETs and solve the problems related to initiatives in this program.
Academic support is given to teachers to engage in Action research to solve the issues and problems related to classroom transaction through DIETs and CTEs. The teachers and stakeholders of education have to conduct the Action Research.
A platform for high school students /teachers to showcase their talent about new inventions, action research and art applications. Innovative programs like art camps (painting camps) and art workshops, lectures and exhibitions are conducted at zonal level for drawing teachers. Students are encouraged to express their creativity through fine arts instruction and performing arts and teachers to gain knowledge.
23.National Achievement Survey
In association with NCERT preparations are on its way to conduct National Achievement Survey (Examination) for classes 3,5 and 8.
24.In-service Teacher Training
Training programs to use the new textbooks based on NCF 2005 along with CCE are organized for primary school teachers from SSA and for high school teachers from RMSA
Government Primary and Secondary school teachers are given opportunity to participate in the trainings Certificate in English Language Teaching (CELT) and Diploma in English Communication (DiEC) conducted by Regional Institute of English, South India, Jnanabharathi, Bangalore. Eligible and interested teachers can submit the proposal to DSERT. The fee of Rs.2500 towards DiEC will be reimbursed by Government.
Nali Kali training is imparted to the teachers who are teaching Nali-Kali lessons in government kannada and urdu primary schools

An administrative training for head masters of high schools from RMSA through DIETs and CTEs
29.Training to SDMC members
For effective involvement of community in school development, high school SDMC members are trained from RMSA and Primary school SDMC members are trained from SSA
30.Training for educational administrators
Training for administrators from CRPs to district DDPIs from SSA
Deputation of government primary and high school teachers and DIET/CTE lecturers to trainings conducted by CCRT, New Delhi
32.Satellite Based Training Programme
Through DSERT studio Educational Training programs are telecast through teleconferencing to BRCs, CRCs, school teachers and officers of different levels of the department.
Academies Train administrative officers and DIET/ CTE/ BRC faculty on computer skills including usage of Internet
34.Web based Training
DIETs and CTE faculty are given Web based training in subjects like e-media, research, skills, role of DIET and CTEs, Planning and general subjects to facilitate them in the use of ICT
35.Value education trainings
Training in value education and yoga for primary and secondary school teachers

37.The Competitions conducted by DSERT
Science Seminar for high school students
Science seminars are organised for high school students, High school Teachers and primary school teachers, which help to develop various qualities like collection of data, presentation skills, clarity in concept etc.,
Science Exhibition (for high school students)
An opportunity to participate and win prizes in taluk, district, state, division and national level science exhibition.
Science Drama Competition (for high school students)
An opportunity for 1st prize winning team of 8 students at district level with 1 guide teacher to compete and win the prize and award at Divisional level, State level and later in national level
Students nominated by schools heads are awarded INSPIRE award by DST New Delhi. These students participate in District, State and National level exhibitions with their models / projects.
National Talent Search Examination (NTSE)
Students of 10th Standard are eligible to appear in this exam. Those who get selected at National level examination will be awarded a scholarship of Rs. 1250/- (sponsored by MHRD) till completion of their education and students selected at state level will be given a scholarship of Rs. 2000/- for a period of 2 years.
National Means cum Merit Scholarship (NMMS)
This scheme is for the benefit of students who have parental annual income below Rs. 1,50,000/- and studying in 8th Std. A state level examination with a pattern similar to NTSE is conducted and the scholarship awardees are given Rs.500/- per month for a span of 4 years.
Note: With the cooperation of district Panchayats, DDPIs, DIET principals, local science centres and block educational officers the number of students appearing for NTSE and NMMS examinations is increasing year by year and is helping talented economically backward children.
