Shimoga is an ancient land, which was earlier called as Mandli. Legend has that Saint Parashuram of Krutha Yuga performed his ritual and cleaned his weapon (Kodli) at Parashurama Thirtha in River Tunga at Thirthahalli. Ramayana also has the reference of Maricha relative of Ra vana got killed in the disguise of Deer by Rama at Mrugavadhe in Thirthahalli. The name Shimoga has its own Legend. A Saint who took water in his bowl of River Tunga exclaimed that itís very sweet so the name Sihi meaning sweet and mogge meaning bowl became the name of this City.

The district with sprawling area of 8465 Sq. Kms, is situated between 13* 27' and 14* 39' North - latitude and between 74* 38' and 74* 4' East longitude.≠It is hounded on the east by Davangere district, south by the Chickmagalur district, west by the Udupi and North-Canara districts and on the north by Haveri and Davanagere districts.

Historically The first known Kingdom of Karnataka was created by Mayuravarma of Kadambas at Talagunda, The queen Shanthala wife of the great King Vishnuvardhana was Born and brought up at Balligavi in Shikaripura Taluk.Nayakas of Keladhi and Ikkeri ruled over this land. Shivappa Nayaka was the great king who is famous for his Tax. Measurements Tippu sultan has captured the kingdom for sometime.Budhi basappa rebelled against British and carved his own kingdom at Nagar and built the Fort. Esoor the famous village of Shikaripura taluk has carved its niche in the history of freedom movement of our country it's the first village in India, which declared its Independence, which was later crushed by, the imperial army by killing four elders of the village. Many got imprisoned. Thus shimoga has a special place in the annuls of history of Karnataka.
